Useful links to healthcare bodies across Canada.

Federal Bodies

Health Canada is the federal department responsible for helping Canadians maintain and improve their health. For clinical trials, it is the primary regulatory body that approves and oversees clinical trial applications (CTAs) for drugs, biologics, and medical devices. They ensure that clinical trials are conducted safely and ethically, and that the products tested meet high standards of quality, safety, and efficacy before they can be marketed in Canada.

Health Canada

CIHR is the main federal agency that funds health research in Canada. Composed of 13 "virtual" institutes, CIHR supports a wide range of health research, including clinical trials, with the goal of creating new knowledge and translating it into improved health for Canadians, more effective health services and products, and a stronger Canadian healthcare system. They are a significant source of funding and help shape the national health research agenda.

Canadian Institutes of Health Research

The Ontario Ministry of Health is responsible for administering Ontario's healthcare system. While Health Canada regulates clinical trials at a federal level, the Ministry of Health oversees the broader healthcare landscape within Ontario, including health insurance (OHIP), drug benefits, and services. They play a role in the overall provincial health strategy, which can impact the environment for clinical research.

Ontatio Ministry of Health

Cont'd

Ontario Health, while not a direct regulator of clinical trials, their work in system integration, quality improvement, and data management can indirectly influence the operational landscape for clinical research within the province.

Ontario Health

Clinical Trials Ontario (CTO) is a non-profit organisation dedicated to strengthening Ontario's competitive advantage for conducting high-quality clinical trials. They work to streamline the ethics review process, enhance research networks, and provide resources to support the efficient start-up and conduct of clinical trials across the province. Their aim is to make Ontario a more attractive location for clinical research.
